The Honourable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Selvi J. Jayalalithaa inaugurated “AMMA Unavakangal (Budget canteens)” in nine corporations such as Madurai, Coimbatore, Tiruchirapalli, Tirunelveli, Salem, Tiruppur, Tuticorin, Vellore and Erode through video conferencing with the intention of providing good quality, hygienic food to the poor, working and middle class people of the state. The Honourable Chief Minister has also introduced additional food varieties in the already successfully running AMMA Unavagams in the Chennai metropolitan city which has obtained the overwhelming response from the people.

The State Government under the leadership of Honourable Chief Minister Selvi J. Jayalalaithaa has taken various constructive efforts to offer healthy and nutritional food varieties at affordable prices, for all sections of people in the process of building a disease free and healthy society in the future. To enable this objective, the Honourable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu had inaugurated “AMMA Unavakangal” on 19.2.2013 through Chennai Corporation body. This scheme provides good quality as well as hygienic food at affordable rates for much lower income section in the Chennai city such as poor, working and middle class people, daily wage labourers, drivers and load men.

Idlis are sold at ₹1 per idly in the morning hours from 7­ to 10 A.M, Sambar rice is sold at the rate of ₹5 and curd rice at the rate of ₹3 during lunch time between 12 noon and 3 pm in the “AMMA Unavakangal”. As this scheme is very beneficial for the poor, working class and ordinary people, the Honourable Chief Minister of Tamilnadu Selvi J. Jayalalithaa has announced in the Tamil Nadu state assembly that the scheme would be extended to other parts of Tamil Nadu. As a first step, 10 budget canteens would be setup in all other corporation cities like Madurai, Tiruchirapalli, Coimbatore, Tirunelveli, Salem, Tiruppur, Tuticorin, Vellore and Erode.

Going by that announcement, the Honourable Chief Minister of Tamilnadu Selvi J. Jayalalithaa has today inaugurated 10 “AMMA Unavakangal” in the state secretariat through video conferencing facility in each of the nine corporation cities Madurai, Coimbatore, Tiruchirapalli, Tirunelveli, Salem, Tiruppur, Tuticorin, Vellore and Erode.

Also, accommodating the request of people to additionally include Pongal in the morning breakfast and include additional food varieties for lunch in the Chennai Corporation Unavakangal, the Honourable Chief Minister of Tamilnadu Selvi J. Jayalalithaa has announced in the Tamilnadu state assembly that all the AMMA budget canteens functioning in Chennai would henceforth provide Pongal-sambar at the rate of ₹5 for the breakfast apart from the regular idlis and curry leaf rice or lemon rice sold at the outlets.

The Chief Minister of Tamilnadu Selvi J. Jayalalithaa has launched the scheme of providing additional food varieties pongal-sambar, curry leaves/lemon rice through video conferencing in the 200 AMMA budget canteens functioning in the Chennai metropolitan city.

The Honourable minister for Municipal Administration, Rural Development, Law, Courts and Prisons, Chennai Corporation Mayor, Chief Secretary, Municipal Administration and Drinking water supply department secretary, Municipal Administration Commissioner, Chennai Corporation Commissioner and other higher government officials participated in the inauguration function.
